How to Enable SMS on a Shared Number

Overview

This is a step-by-step guide for enabling SMS in your Spoke Phone account for an SMS capable phone number that will be shared amongst users. SMS & MMS capable numbers within the United States requires an A2P 10DLC campaign for messaging compliance purposes.

Requirements

Enable Team Inbound Messages

A Team Inbox lets you consolidate customer SMS and MMS messages into a single place, so internal teams can collaborate and respond seamlessly to customer messages while remaining compliant. You will need to enable the Shared Inbox setting within the Account Portal Team Management section.

Step 1: In the Spoke Phone Account Portal, go to Manage Teams

Step 2: Edit an existing Team you want to add a Team Inbox for, or create a new Team specifically for replying to customer messages.

Step 3: Go to the section called Shared Inbox within your team.

Step 4: Click on the +ADD under the Numbers that customers can use to send messages to everyone in this team.

Step 5: Select the SMS capable number and click SELECT

Step 6: Complete any Additional Settings, then as a final step select Turn on Shared Inbox for this Team.

If you cannot enable the Shared Inbox setting, please contact the Spoke Phone Support Team.

Enable Outbound Messages

To enable the ability to send outbound messages on a shared number, you have to setup an allowable SenderID (ANI) List for the users sending SMS.

Step 1: Log into your Spoke Phone Account Portal

Step 2: Go to Phone Numbers -> Advanced Routing

Step 3: Click the Add list button.

Step 4: Give the list a logical name for who will be using the numbers and what brands/functions they support, such as West Coast Sales, or Mercedes Parts and Service.

Step 5: Select one or more Messaging SenderIDs (numbers) that the people assigned to this list will be able to use when sending messages by clicking on the +SELECT button.

Step 6: Add one or more users who will be able to use this list by clicking on the +ADD button under assigned users.

Step 7: Click on the SAVE button at the top right to finalize the list.

Register your A2P 10DLC Compliance Campaign (US Phone Numbers)

A2P (Application to Person) 10DLC (10 digit long code) is the standard that United States telecom carriers have put in place to ensure that SMS traffic to United States end-users through long code phone numbers is verified and consensual. Anyone sending or receiving SMS/MMS messages over a US number from the application must register for A2P 10DLC. The below article contains the Twilio steps to follow:
